How long can a news photo live?
Some news photos only stay on screen for a few hours, while others reappear years later in documentaries, research reports, historical exhibitions, or public archives. The events documented in the photos may have long since left the front page of the news, but the images themselves do not completely disappear from public life. They may be rediscovered, reinterpreted by another generation of readers, or even re-enter the market under new institutional and technological conditions.
In the traditional news cycle, the answer is often not optimistic. It appears on the front page of newspapers, on the homepage of news websites, and is widely disseminated along with the event's popularity, only to be replaced by new images a few days later. For readers, it has fulfilled its mission of recording the present; for many media outlets, its commercial value seems to gradually end as traffic declines.
AI is changing this boundary.
Today, a photograph, besides serving the day's news, may also appear in documentary production, academic research, listed company annual reports, government reports, educational courses, corporate training, historical databases, and various AI applications that require credible image sources. As long as the source is traceable, the rights are clear, and the scope of authorization can be confirmed, it still has the potential to be retrieved, reused, and repriced.

Reuters' image asset integration
This change can be clearly seen in Reuters' recent integration of image content and licensing business.
Reuters continues to integrate the Screenocean image database, Imagin Images sports images, and visual content from other partners into a more comprehensive licensing system. It also invests in search, tagging, transcription, and content discovery technologies to enable users to find the materials they need more efficiently by people, events, locations, times, and themes, and complete the corresponding licensing within the platform.
Different publicly available information does not entirely agree on the scope of integration, launch time, and specific product arrangements, and related business is still undergoing continuous adjustments. Therefore, it is not appropriate to regard any single version as the final decision. However, the overall direction is quite clear: news footage is shedding its one-time use status and gradually entering a content system that can be preserved, retrieved, have its rights confirmed, continuously licensed, and managed long-term.
Understanding these changes merely as upgrades to platform interfaces would underestimate their significance for the media industry. A deeper shift occurs in the content itself. Photos, videos, and historical archives that were once rapidly consumed with the news cycle are now re-entering the market in a new guise. They remain news pieces, but they also possess the attributes of assets that can be continuously managed, reused, and generate revenue.
Historical Changes in News Value
Reuters has a long history of being closely associated with redefining the value of information.

At that time, information transmission was still limited by distance and technology, and market participants were willing to pay the cost for faster-arriving price information. More than 170 years later, information transmission can be completed almost instantly. Speed is still important, but it can hardly constitute a moat for news organizations on its own. What is scarcer today is credible content that has been interviewed and verified, clear and complete rights relationships, and materials that can be preserved, managed, and used legally for a long time.

This change has reopened the value chain of journalism.
In the past, media management of content largely focused on interviewing, editing, publishing, and traffic. Once a work was published, the editorial department's attention quickly shifted to the next event. Although historical content was stored in databases, it often lacked complete markings, rights information, licensing conditions, and usage records, making it difficult to re-enter commercial and public use scenarios years later.
Today, whether content can generate long-term value depends on a series of more specific questions: whether the data is properly preserved, whether the author and rights holder can be identified, whether the scope of authorization is clear, whether different versions can be tracked, whether past usage records are complete, whether AI systems can be invoked under legal conditions, and how the related revenue returns to the content producers and rights holders.
These tasks, which were often seen as an adjunct to legal, archival, or back-office systems, have gradually become core infrastructure of the news industry.
Rights records determine the lifespan of content.
A photograph lacking information on the date of capture, the author, the context of the event, and the rights statement, even if the image itself has news value, is difficult to reuse safely. Conversely, a photograph with a complete source, rights chain, licensing terms, pricing standards, and usage history may re-enter documentaries, academic publications, educational content, corporate research, or AI products years after the news cycle has ended.
Time doesn't necessarily diminish the value of content; sometimes, it can even enhance its historical significance. What truly fades with time is usually not the work itself, but rather the related rights records, source information, and institutional arrangements.
Therefore, whether content can become an asset does not depend on its price or the amount of traffic it has received. The key lies in whether it possesses verifiable rights, enforceable licensing rules, traceable usage records, and the ability to continuously generate public or commercial value.

The pressure and demands brought by AI
The rapid development of AI has made this problem even more urgent.
In recent years, a large amount of news content has been used for model training, content generation, and data retrieval, prompting media outlets, publishing houses, photographers, and authors to re-examine how their content is used. The controversy extends beyond just whether payment should be made; it also concerns the transparency of sources, the authorization of use, the identifiability of works, and the rights holder's ability to refuse, restrict, or track use.
For news organizations, the pressure from AI is real. Business models that relied on search traffic and platform distribution are being disrupted, as content may be absorbed, summarized, or regenerated without explicit authorization, and the original producers may not receive corresponding rewards.
However, AI also increases the value of trustworthy content.
Models, businesses, research institutions, and government departments all require reliable sources, especially in high-risk areas such as finance, law, public policy, healthcare, war, and major emergencies. Content from unclear sources is unlikely to be accepted for decision-making purposes. As market demand for credible information increases, news content with complete rights and clear sources may actually find new applications.
AI can also assist media outlets in reorganizing their historical content. Large amounts of images, videos, and text files that were previously difficult to process manually can be rediscovered through voice transcription, person recognition, scene classification, semantic search, and multilingual tagging. While technology itself doesn't automatically create content assets, it significantly reduces the costs of organizing and retrieving data, bringing long-dormant archives back into usable condition.
Technological convenience still requires rights and order
The real dividing line lies in whether the media still holds the reins of power.
The easier it is for content to be found, the clearer the boundaries of authorization need to be; the easier it is for AI to access data, the less ambiguous the source and usage records need to be. Technological conveniences lacking institutional support may accelerate the loss of value; technology built on a foundation of complete rights may extend the life of content.
Reuters' consolidation of its image assets is precisely what deserves the media industry's attention. It manages not only a vast number of images and videos, but more importantly, the authors, sources, usage conditions, licensing records, and commercial relationships behind each piece of content. While the size of the database is important, the ability to maintain order in rights determines the long-term circulation of this data.

When I'm thinking about the content system of GFM, I often come back to this question.
How far can an article go after it's published?
If content management stops at publication and distribution, its lifespan is easily limited by the news cycle. After the traffic ends, the work may lie dormant in the website's backend for a long time, difficult to rediscover, unable to be securely authorized, let alone enter research, education, institutional subscriptions, or AI application scenarios.
In recent years, GFM has been exploring how to create a more complete institutional record for its content. Articles, images, videos, and multilingual versions need to clearly indicate the author, editorial responsibility, source, language, publication date, version relationship, scope of use, and licensing conditions. If the content is used for institutional research, commercial collaborations, AI applications, or third-party distribution in the future, the usage should also be traceable, and the revenue should be distributed according to pre-established rules.
This process may seem trivial, but it determines whether a media outlet can truly own its own content.
For a media outlet that is still growing, establishing a system is not easy. It requires long-term collaboration between editors, technology, legal, business, and copyright management, as well as overcoming the news industry's inertia of chasing the next hot topic. These investments may not be immediately reflected in traffic, but they can determine whether content remains usable and credible years later.
Public value and commercial value
GFM's understanding of content assets is not simply about putting a price tag on every article. News first and foremost has public information value; many reports should naturally be widely read, cited, and discussed. Content policies must address the boundaries between different use cases: personal reading, public citation, media reprinting, business research, model training, database inclusion, and internal corporate use—the rights and responsibilities involved are not the same.
Only by clarifying these differences can public value and commercial value avoid being mutually exclusive.
Once a news interview is completed, the facts have been recorded; once published, the work enters the public sphere. Local media, specialty media, independent journalists, photographers, and emerging digital platforms can all possess content with historical, industrial, or public value. The difference lies in whether this content is curated, whether its sources can be verified, whether rights are preserved, and whether there are enforceable rules for its future use.

News is updated every day, but what truly remains is often not the fastest published article, but the one that is still worth searching for, citing, and reusing years later.
When a piece of content retains a complete source, clear rights, and trust that stands the test of time, its news cycle may have ended, but another life has just begun.
